What the Garrett GTX3582R is

The GTX3582R is part of Garrett’s GTX line, and Garrett’s current version is the GTX3582R Gen II. Garrett rates the Gen II at 450 to 900 horsepower on engines of 2.0 to 4.5 liters, a figure it calculates from the compressor’s choke flow as potential flywheel horsepower. It has an 8 mm dual ceramic ball bearing cartridge in a water-cooled center housing, a 66 / 82 mm compressor wheel and a 68 / 62 mm turbine wheel, and comes in standard and reverse rotation. Garrett lists its own turbine housings for it (T3, T4 and V-band inlets, 0.61 to 1.06 A/R) as free-float, for use with an external wastegate.

Garrett says the Gen II compressor wheel gives up to 20% more horsepower than the earlier version, and that Gen II turbos fit the same space as the equivalent GT and GTX Gen I turbos, although Gen II compressor housings do not fit Gen I wheels. This page lists Gen II turbos with T3, T4, divided and V-band turbine housings from 0.61 to 1.06 A/R, reverse-rotation versions, a version with an internally wastegated RB25DET-style T3 housing, Gen I turbos sold without a turbine housing, supercores and CHRAs, and turbos for the Mazdaspeed3 and the Ford Falcon XR6 (Barra). Garrett’s own guidance on turbine housings: a smaller A/R gives quicker boost response and more turbine power at low engine speed; a larger A/R lets the wheel flow more, with lower back pressure and more power at high engine speed.
