Mitsubishi TD04 Turbocharger: Subaru, Volvo & Light Diesel Applications Guide

The Mitsubishi TD04 Turbocharger is one of the most widely used small-frame turbos ever built, powering everything from Subaru WRX performance engines to Volvo passenger cars and a broad range of light-duty diesel and industrial applications. If you turn wrenches on European or Japanese platforms, or you run a small fleet with compact diesels, you have almost certainly seen a TD04 bolted to an exhaust manifold. This guide breaks down what makes the TD04 tick, the applications it serves, how to spot a failing unit, and how to source the right replacement parts.

At PT Turbo, we have been rebuilding and supplying turbochargers for over 45 years. The TD04 family crosses our benches constantly, so the specs and advice below come straight from real teardown and dyno experience, not a spec sheet copied off a distributor site.

What Is the Mitsubishi TD04 and Where It Fits

The TD04 is part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ small-frame turbocharger line, sitting between the smaller TD03 and the larger TD05 and TD06 units. It uses a journal-bearing center section, a cast compressor wheel, and an integral or externally mounted wastegate depending on the application.

Its popularity comes from a compact footprint combined with solid airflow. A TD04 can support anywhere from roughly 200 to 340 horsepower depending on compressor and turbine sizing, which is why it shows up on both gasoline performance cars and light diesels needing quick spool.

The compressor and turbine sizes are denoted by numbers like 13T, 15G, 19T, and 20T. The number and letter combination tells you the compressor trim and wheel size, which directly affects spool speed and top-end capacity. A TD04-13T spools fast and suits smaller displacement engines, while a TD04-19T or 20T flows more air for higher output builds.

Common TD04 Variants at a Glance

Variant Typical Application Approx. HP Support Spool Character
TD04-13T Subaru, small diesels 200-250 hp Very fast
TD04L-13T / 14T Volvo, Saab, light diesel 220-280 hp Fast
TD04-15G Mitsubishi, Subaru swaps 250-300 hp Moderate
TD04-19T / 20T Performance builds 290-340 hp Later, higher flow

Subaru Applications

Subaru enthusiasts know the TD04 as the factory turbo on many turbocharged EJ-series engines. The TD04L-13T appeared on USDM WRX models with the EJ205 and EJ255 engines, delivering the quick response those cars are known for.

The upgraded TD04-15G and 19T units are popular bolt-on choices for owners chasing more power without stepping up to a larger frame. Because the mounting flanges and oil feed lines are shared across most variants, upgrading within the family is often a straightforward job.

One thing to watch on Subaru applications is oil supply. The banjo bolt feeding the turbo contains a small filter screen that clogs over time. A restricted screen starves the journal bearings and is a leading cause of premature TD04 failure on these cars. Always replace or clean it during a turbo swap.

Volvo and European Applications

Volvo used TD04 and TD04L variants extensively across the 850, S70, V70, S60, and S80 platforms, as well as many turbocharged five-cylinder engines. Saab and select Audi and Peugeot applications also ran TD04-based units.

On these platforms the wastegate actuator is a common wear item. The diaphragm inside the pneumatic actuator eventually fails, causing boost creep, overboost fault codes, or underboost if the linkage seizes. Replacing the actuator is far cheaper than replacing the entire turbo when the cartridge is still healthy.

PT Turbo stocks correct-fit Mitsubishi pneumatic actuators for these applications. The Mitsubishi Pneumatic Actuator 4918918935 is available for $83.99, view the Mitsubishi Pneumatic Actuator 4918918935 here. Matching the actuator spring pressure to your factory boost target is critical, so verify the part number against your unit before ordering.

Light Diesel and Industrial Applications

Beyond passenger cars, the TD04 and its close relative the TD03 serve a wide range of light diesel and industrial engines. Compact excavators, skid steers, generator sets, and small commercial diesels frequently use these frames because they spool quickly at low engine speeds, which suits the torque-focused nature of diesel work.

Diesel applications put extra thermal load on the turbine side, and they run closer to the edge on exhaust gas recirculation systems that recirculate hot, soot-laden gas. Carbon buildup on the turbine housing and wastegate mechanism is common, so periodic inspection pays off on hard-working diesels.

For TD03-based diesel and industrial units, actuator failure follows the same pattern as the TD04. PT Turbo carries two direct-fit TD03 actuators, each at $104.33. See the Mitsubishi TD03 Pneumatic Actuator 49S3118761 here and the alternate calibration Mitsubishi TD03 Pneumatic Actuator 49S3118651 here. The two part numbers use different spring settings, so match yours by the number stamped on the old actuator or by the boost pressure spec for your engine.

Symptoms of a Failing Mitsubishi TD04 Turbocharger

Catching a failing turbo early saves you from a grenaded unit sending metal downstream into the engine. Here is how symptoms typically progress by severity.

Severity Symptom Likely Cause
Early Slight whistle or whine change Minor bearing wear, small boost leak
Early Boost creep or overboost code Failing wastegate actuator diaphragm
Moderate Blue smoke on startup or accel Failing seals, oil in exhaust or intake
Moderate Noticeable power loss, laggy spool Worn compressor wheel, restricted feed
Severe Grinding, shaft play, oil consumption Bearing failure, imminent turbo death

If you can grab the compressor wheel and feel more than very slight play, or you see the wheel contacting the housing, the cartridge is done. At that point you are looking at a rebuild or a replacement unit rather than a simple actuator swap.

New, Remanufactured, or Rebuild: Choosing Your Path

When a TD04 fails, you have three realistic options. Each has a place depending on budget, downtime tolerance, and how healthy the surrounding parts are.

  • New unit: Highest cost, best for critical applications where you want maximum service life and zero core hassle.
  • Remanufactured unit: Rebuilt to spec with new bearings, seals, and a balanced CHRA. Strong value with warranty coverage.
  • Rebuild your existing core: Best when the housings are in good shape and you want to retain your exact factory calibration.

Our remanufactured turbochargers are fully disassembled, cleaned, inspected, fitted with new rotating components, and balanced on a VSR machine before they ship. If you would rather keep your original housings, our turbocharger rebuild service restores your unit to OEM tolerances.

Installation and Longevity Tips for the TD04

A TD04 lives or dies on clean oil and proper installation. Follow these basics and the unit will reward you with long service life.

  • Prime the turbo with clean oil through the feed port before starting the engine.
  • Replace the oil feed banjo filter screen, especially on Subaru applications.
  • Use new gaskets and torque the exhaust flange evenly to avoid warping.
  • Check the oil drain line for kinks or restriction, which causes seal failure fast.
  • Let the engine idle 30 to 60 seconds after hard driving before shutdown to prevent oil coking.
