When a turbocharger fails, you have four options: professional rebuild, quality remanufactured, OEM new, or offshore replacement. The price range spans from $150 to over $3,000 for the same application. Here is how to think through the decision.
What a Professional Rebuild Actually Includes
A proper turbocharger rebuild is not a gasket kit. It involves:
- Complete disassembly and cleaning of all components
- Inspection of the turbine and compressor housings for heat damage, cracks, and erosion
- Replacement of journal bearings, thrust bearings, and piston ring seals
- Inspection of the turbine and compressor wheels for damage
- Dynamic balancing of the rotating assembly on a VSR (Vibration Sort and Report) machine
- Reassembly and final inspection
The balancing step is non-negotiable. A rotating assembly spinning at 100,000+ RPM must be balanced to within fractions of a gram-inch. Any shop that skips VSR balancing is not performing a real rebuild.
Cost Comparison
| Option | Typical Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Offshore new (eBay/Amazon) | $150–$400 | Not VSR-balanced. High failure rate under 30k miles. |
| Professional rebuild (send-in) | $300–$700 | Depends on core condition. Includes VSR balance. Best value if core is good. |
| Quality remanufactured (PT Turbo) | $400–$900 | Rebuilt to OEM spec, VSR-balanced, warranty included. Ships immediately. |
| OEM new | $800–$3,000+ | Available for some applications. Full OEM warranty. Highest upfront cost. |
When to Rebuild vs Replace
Rebuild your existing core when:
- The core is in rebuildable condition (turbine and compressor housings are undamaged)
- You want the fastest possible return to original OEM specs
- The application is commercial or high-mileage and OEM new is unavailable or prohibitively expensive
Replace with a remanufactured unit when:
- You need same-day or next-day turnaround and cannot wait for a send-in rebuild
- Your core has housing damage that makes rebuild impractical
- You want a warranty without sending your vehicle off the road
Consider OEM new when:
- The vehicle is under factory warranty
- The application is safety-critical and cost is secondary
- The turbo is a newer model with no remanufactured options yet available
What PT Turbo’s Process Looks Like
PT Turbo has been rebuilding turbochargers since 1978. Every unit—whether a core sent in for rebuild or a remanufactured unit from our inventory—goes through the same 12-step process: teardown, cleaning, dimensional inspection, parts replacement, VSR balancing, assembly, and final leak-down check. We do not ship an unbalanced turbo.
Not sure whether your core is rebuildable? Call us at (909) 824-1020 and describe what you see. In most cases we can tell you over the phone whether a rebuild or a reman unit is the right call. Contact PT Turbo here.
