PT Turbo’s Turbocharger Rebuild Process: What Happens to Your Turbo

PT Turbo has been rebuilding turbochargers since 1978. The process we use today is the result of 45+ years of refinement, equipment investment, and hands-on experience with tens of thousands of units. Here is what actually happens when a turbocharger comes through our shop.

Step 1: Teardown and Initial Assessment

Every turbocharger that arrives—whether a customer’s core for rebuild or an exchange core—is completely disassembled by a trained technician. All components are separated and laid out for inspection. At this stage we assess the overall condition and identify the failure mode. This assessment determines whether the core is rebuildable and what parts will be needed.

Step 2: Hot Wash and Cleaning

All metal components—housings, center section, shaft, wheels—are cleaned in our industrial hot wash system to remove carbon deposits, oil residue, and contamination. The turbine housing, which operates at the highest temperatures, requires the most thorough cleaning to expose any heat cracks or erosion that was hidden by deposits.

Step 3: Dimensional Inspection

After cleaning, each component is inspected for dimensional compliance with OEM specifications:

• Bearing bore diameter and surface finish
• Shaft diameter and straightness
• Thrust face geometry
• Compressor and turbine housing clearances
• Turbine and compressor wheel blade integrity

Components outside of specification are flagged for replacement. We do not reuse parts that do not meet spec.

Step 4: Parts Replacement

Bearings, thrust components, and piston ring seals are replaced on every rebuild regardless of apparent condition. We use OEM-specification or OEM-equivalent parts—not offshore generic components. For VGT units, the vane assembly and actuator are inspected and replaced if worn beyond specification.

Step 5: VSR Dynamic Balancing

After the new bearings and seals are installed, the rotating assembly is mounted on our VSR (Vibration Sorting Rig) balancing machine. The assembled cartridge runs in its own bearings with pressurized oil and is driven up through its speed range with compressed air while sensors measure vibration. Material is removed from the compressor nut or the back of the compressor wheel until the assembly is within the vibration limit for that turbo model.

This is the step that most distinguishes professional rebuilds from inferior alternatives. An unbalanced rotating assembly destroys new bearings within hours.

Step 6: Final Assembly and Testing

The balanced rotating assembly is assembled into the clean housings with new seals. The completed turbocharger is inspected for correct clearances, free shaft rotation, and absence of wheel contact. VGT units are tested for actuator range of motion and response.
