When your turbocharger fails, you face a choice: buy a brand-new OEM unit, a remanufactured turbo, or a cheap offshore knock-off. Understanding the difference can save you money without sacrificing reliability — or cost you dearly if you choose wrong.
What Is an OEM Turbocharger?
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) turbos are built to the exact specifications your vehicle left the factory with. They come from the same suppliers — Holset (Cummins), Garrett (Ford, GM), BorgWarner (various) — and carry a full manufacturer warranty. The downside: they are expensive, often $1,500–$3,500 for diesel truck applications.
What Is a Remanufactured Turbocharger?
A properly remanufactured turbo starts with a genuine core (the center housing, compressor, and turbine housings from an original unit). The worn components — bearings, seals, shaft, and often the wheels — are replaced with new OEM-spec parts. The unit is then balanced to factory tolerances on a specialized VSR balancing machine.
Done right, a reman turbo performs identically to a new OEM unit. Done wrong — with used parts, improper balancing, or no quality control — it will fail quickly. If you’re not sure what failure looks like, review the 7 warning signs your turbocharger is failing.
How to Tell a Quality Reman from a Cheap Knockoff
- Genuine cores: Quality remans use original housings, not cast replicas. Look for casting marks matching the OEM part number.
- New internals: Bearings, thrust washers, seals, and piston rings should all be new. Ask for a parts list.
- Dynamic balancing: The rotating assembly must be balanced at operating speeds. Static balancing is not sufficient.
- Warranty: A confidence-inspiring reman comes with at least a 1-year unlimited-mileage warranty.
- Technician expertise: Who built it matters. A shop with 40+ years of experience is not comparable to an offshore assembler.
The Problem with Cheap Offshore Turbos
Discount online marketplaces are flooded with turbos at prices that seem too good to be true. Learn how to spot a counterfeit or substandard turbocharger before you buy. These units typically use cast replicas that do not match OEM tolerances, cheap journal bearings instead of OEM ball bearings, and unbalanced rotating assemblies that fail within 20,000 miles. The result: you buy twice. The cost of a second installation alone often exceeds what you would have spent on a quality reman the first time.
Getting the Most from Your Rebuilt Turbo
Once you have a quality reman installed, follow the proper break-in procedure to seat the new bearings correctly. After that, the seven habits that extend turbocharger life will keep it running for 150,000 miles or more.
