The online marketplace for turbocharger parts is flooded with inexpensive units from overseas suppliers. Some are adequate. Many are not. After 45 years of rebuilding turbos and fielding calls from owners who bought the wrong thing, we have seen every common pitfall. Here is how to shop smart.
Red Flags in Online Turbo Listings
“OEM quality” without naming the manufacturer: This phrase means nothing. Every legitimate turbocharger manufacturer—Holset, Garrett, BorgWarner, Mitsubishi—has a name on the product. “OEM quality” without a brand name is marketing language for an unbranded offshore casting.
Prices far below market: A remanufactured HE351CW retails for $400–$700 from reputable suppliers. If you see one for $150 on a major marketplace, it has not been VSR-balanced and the internal components are likely not to OEM specification. The cost savings disappear quickly when it fails at 25,000 miles.
No VSR balancing disclosure: Any legitimate rebuilt or remanufactured turbocharger will prominently state that the rotating assembly was dynamically balanced. If the listing does not mention balancing, it was not balanced.
Lifetime warranty on a $150 turbo: Warranty claims are only as good as the supplier who backs them. Many offshore sellers operating under marketplace accounts close and reopen under different names. A lifetime warranty from an entity that may not exist in 18 months is not a warranty.
How to Verify a Core Is Genuine
For Holset turbos, the casting number and part number are stamped on the turbine housing and center section. You can cross-reference these against the Cummins parts catalog or call PT Turbo with the numbers for verification. Genuine Holset cores have consistent casting quality and machined surfaces that are visibly different from offshore copies.
Weight is also a useful indicator. A genuine Holset or Garrett core will match the OEM specification weight closely. Offshore units are occasionally lighter due to thinner castings or different alloys.
What to Look for in Warranty Terms
A meaningful warranty specifies: coverage period (at least 12 months), what is covered (parts and labor or parts only), how claims are processed, and who you call. If the warranty requires returning the part overseas at your expense for inspection, it is functionally worthless on a $400 part.
