What the Garrett GT2871R is

The GT2871R belongs to Garrett’s original GT Series of performance turbochargers: a ball-bearing turbo with a water-cooled center housing (CHRA), a 53 / 71 mm compressor wheel and a 54 / 47 mm, 76 trim turbine wheel. Garrett rates it at 280 to 475 horsepower on engines of 1.8 to 3.0 liters and sells it as a complete turbo with turbine housing and actuator (836026-5020S with a 0.86 A/R housing, 836026-5021S with 0.64 A/R). Its GT28 turbine kits come as T25 5-bolt wastegated housings (0.64 and 0.86 A/R) or V-band free-float housings (0.57 and 0.72 A/R), which Garrett says are not directly interchangeable.

Besides Garrett’s own part numbers, this page lists versions with the 52 trim compressor wheel (among them the Nissan RB26DETT “Skyline” housing version, 836026-5006S), versions without a turbine housing for reusing your own, a bolt-on turbo for the Ford Focus ST 2.0L EcoBoost, and T04B, T04E and T04S frame compressor housings for its 71 mm, 56 trim wheel. Garrett’s own guidance on turbine housings: a smaller A/R gives quicker boost response and more turbine power at low engine speed; a larger A/R lets the wheel flow more, with lower back pressure and more power at high engine speed.
