About Semi Truck Turbocharger Rebuilds
PT Turbo rebuilds the turbochargers that move freight, from the Holset HE400VG and HE500VG units on Cummins ISX engines to the Garrett GTA-series VNTs on Detroit DD15 and PACCAR MX-13 power. We tear each unit down to bare housings, inspect the shaft and wheels, replace bearings, seals, the thrust assembly and worn VGT components, then dynamically balance the rotating group before it ships. This work is for owner-operators who cannot afford downtime and for fleet maintenance shops that need consistent, repeatable results across a row of trucks.
On a highway tractor, a brand-new factory turbo can run thousands of dollars and often comes with the same actuator and VGT geometry that failed the first time. A proper rebuild restores OE boost response and bearing clearances for a fraction of that cost, and we address the actual failure cause instead of just swapping a part number. For most ISX, DD15 and MX-13 units in serviceable condition, rebuilding is the smarter call.
Common Semi Truck Applications
Highway Tractors by Make
- Kenworth T680, T880 and W900 line-haul tractors
- Peterbilt 579, 567 and 389 highway and heavy-haul trucks
- Freightliner Cascadia and Coronado over-the-road tractors
Engine Families We Rebuild For
- Cummins ISX and X15 with Holset HE400VG / HE500VG variable geometry turbos
- Detroit DD15 and DD13 with Garrett GTA-series VNT units
- PACCAR MX-13 and MX-11 with BorgWarner and Garrett variable geometry turbos
By Operation Type
- Owner-operator single trucks needing fast turnaround
- Commercial fleets standardizing rebuilds across multiple units
- Vocational, dump, mixer and heavy-haul trucks running high duty cycles and frequent load changes
Common Semi Truck Turbocharger Symptoms
- Excessive shaft play or wheel-to-housing contact you can feel by hand on a cold ISX or DD15 turbo
- Engine oil leaking from the turbo drain or seeping past the compressor seal, often showing as oil in the charge piping
- High-pitched whine or siren noise that climbs with RPM, pointing to worn journal bearings or thrust wear
- VGT actuator sticking or throwing fault codes on Holset HE400VG and Garrett GTA units, with derate and loss of pulling power
- Low boost and sluggish throttle response, especially noticeable climbing grades under full load
- Overboost spikes or erratic boost from a VGT stuck closed, tripping the ECM into protection
- Black smoke under load from poor air delivery, or blue smoke from seal failure
- Bearing failure with metallic grinding, a wobbling shaft, or debris found in the cold side at inspection
Real Semi Truck Failures We See in Our Shop
- On Cummins ISX Holset HE400VG and HE500VG units, we frequently see the unison ring and sliding nozzle ring carbon and soot-locked from idle time and EGR contamination. The VGT vanes seize, the actuator strains against them, and the truck derates. We blast the cartridge clean, replace worn vanes and pivots, and free the geometry instead of condemning the whole turbo.
- On Detroit DD15 Garrett GTA turbos, the most common failure we rebuild is electronic actuator and VNT vane lock from carbon buildup, often after a regen system has been struggling. The calibration drifts, boost goes erratic, and the unit stores actuator position faults.
- We see oil-side failures on units run with stretched or neglected oil change intervals. Coked oil in the center housing wipes the journal bearings and scores the thrust collar, and on the ISX that shows up as shaft play and oil in the intake.
- Hot shutdowns are a repeat offender on long-haul and heavy-haul trucks. Shutting down hot after a hard pull bakes oil onto the shaft, and we find heat-blued shafts and failed seals on units that were never let to idle down.
- On PACCAR MX-13 VGT turbos, we see actuator failures and vane sticking similar to the DD15, often paired with bearing wear from extended drain intervals on vocational duty cycles.
- On vocational and dump trucks, constant load cycling and high soot loading accelerate VGT wear, so we see sliding ring and bushing wear far sooner than on a steady-state highway tractor.

How to Identify Your Semi Truck Turbo
The identification tag is typically located on the compressor housing, bearing housing, or center section of the turbocharger. It usually lists the model number, assembly number, and serial number. If you’re not sure which Semi Truck model you have, send PT Turbo a photo of the tag and we’ll help identify it before you ship anything.

PT Turbo Inspection Process
Every turbocharger goes through the same evaluation before any work begins:
- Initial evaluationcompressor wheel, turbine wheel, shaft, bearing housing, VGT assembly (if equipped), actuator, and seal surfaces are checked first.
- Complete disassemblythe turbocharger is fully torn down and every major component is inspected individually.
- Cleaningcomponents are cleaned to remove carbon, oil residue, rust, and contamination.
- Measurementcritical tolerances are measured against OEM specification.
- Reassemblyrebuilt using new wear components matched to your specific model.
- CIMAT VSR balancingthe rotating assembly is balanced in-house, with a balance report included.
- Final inspectionleak test, visual inspection, and actuator or wastegate function check before shipment.
No work begins without your approval. You receive a quote after inspection, not before.
Pricing
Most rebuilds require inspection before final pricing. Standard rebuild pricing depends on the turbo model, parts availability, wheel condition, shaft condition, housing damage, and whether upgrades are requested. PT Turbo inspects every turbo and sends a quote before any work begins — no surprise charges.
