About Caterpillar Turbocharger Rebuilds

PT Turbo has been rebuilding Caterpillar turbochargers since 1978, covering everything from on-highway C-series truck engines to industrial power units and marine diesels. We tear each unit down to bare components, inspect the shaft, bearings, housings, and VGT hardware, and rebuild to factory clearance specs using new bearings, seals, thrust components, and a balanced cartridge.

For fleet owners, equipment operators, and power generation customers, a rebuild typically costs a fraction of a new factory unit and turns around far faster. Many Caterpillar housings and center sections are built to outlast the wear parts inside them, so when the bearings or VGT actuator give out, rebuilding the existing unit is almost always the smarter call than buying a complete replacement.

Common Caterpillar Applications

On-Highway Truck Engines

  • Caterpillar C7 and C9 medium-duty truck engines
  • Caterpillar C11, C12, and C13 line-haul engines
  • Caterpillar C15 and C16 heavy-haul engines
  • 3406E and C-15 ACERT applications

Construction and Earthmoving Equipment

  • Excavators, wheel loaders, and track loaders
  • Off-highway haul trucks and articulated dump trucks
  • Motor graders, dozers, and scrapers
  • Industrial C-series and 3300/3400 series engines

Generators and Industrial Power Units

  • Caterpillar standby and prime power generator sets
  • 3406, 3456, and C-series industrial gensets
  • Continuous-duty pump and compressor drive units

Marine Caterpillar Diesel

  • 3208, 3406, and 3412 marine propulsion engines
  • C18 and C32 marine power packages
  • Auxiliary marine gensets and twin-turbo configurations

Common Caterpillar Turbocharger Symptoms

  • Excessive shaft play, either radial wobble or axial end-play you can feel by hand at the compressor wheel
  • Engine oil leaking from the turbine or compressor seals, often showing as oil in the charge pipe or blue smoke at idle
  • High-pitched whining or siren noise that rises with boost, indicating worn bearings or wheel contact
  • VGT actuator sticking or hunting on C13 and C15 ACERT engines, throwing boost-related fault codes
  • Low boost and sluggish throttle response, often paired with derate on electronically controlled C-series units
  • Overboost spikes from a stuck-closed wastegate or seized variable geometry vanes
  • Black smoke under load when the turbo can no longer hit commanded boost
  • Bearing failure with metallic grinding and visible play, frequently following an oil supply or contamination problem

Real Caterpillar Failures We See in Our Shop

  • On C13 and C15 ACERT engines we frequently see the variable geometry vanes and unison ring carbon-locked from soot and EGR-laden exhaust, which sticks the actuator and triggers low-boost or overboost codes. We bead-blast and free the nozzle ring, replace worn vane bushings, and recalibrate the actuator.
  • The units we rebuild often come in with bearing failure traced back to coked oil in the center housing. Caterpillar engines run hot oil drains, and hot-shutdowns after heavy load bake the oil onto the bearings and shaft, scoring the journals.
  • On C7 and C9 truck turbos we regularly find thrust bearing wear from extended idling and restricted oil return lines, which lets the wheels walk fore and aft until the seals start passing oil.
  • Marine 3406 and 3412 units come to us with compressor wheel corrosion and salt-fouled housings, plus turbine-side cracking from constant high-load duty cycles. We replace the wheel and rebalance rather than chase a leaking factory replacement.
  • We see actuator electronics and position-sensor failures on ACERT VGT units that get misdiagnosed as a bad turbo, when the cartridge is fine and only the smart actuator or its calibration is at fault.
  • On generator and industrial 3406/C-series turbos we find oil seal failure from long continuous runtimes combined with worn journal bearings, usually from deferred service intervals on standby and prime power units.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my Caterpillar turbocharger be rebuilt?
In the large majority of cases, yes. If the housings and shaft are not cracked or severely impact-damaged, we can rebuild the unit to factory clearances with new bearings, seals, and a balanced cartridge.
Do you need the whole turbo or just the core?
We can work from the complete turbo or the center cartridge alone, but sending the whole unit lets us inspect the housings, wastegate, and VGT hardware and verify the rebuild as a complete assembly.
Is a rebuild cheaper than a replacement?
Almost always. A rebuild typically runs a fraction of a new Caterpillar factory unit while restoring the same performance and clearances.
Do you balance the turbocharger?
Yes. Every rebuild is balanced on the cartridge, and performance units are VSR high-speed balanced to eliminate vibration and protect the new bearings.
Do you accept nationwide mail-in turbos?
We do. Customers across the country ship us units daily, and we turn most rebuilds around quickly and ship them back ready to install.
What if the damage is too severe to rebuild?
If a housing is cracked or a wheel is destroyed beyond repair, we will tell you up front and source a replacement housing or wheel, or supply a complete replacement unit if rebuilding is not cost-effective.
What is the difference between the C13 and C15 ACERT turbo setups?
The C13 and earlier C15 ACERT use a single variable geometry turbo, while some high-output C15 ACERT engines run a series turbo arrangement with both a VGT and a fixed turbo, so it is important to confirm your exact configuration before ordering parts.
Why does my ACERT VGT keep sticking and throwing boost codes?
That is almost always soot and carbon building up around the nozzle ring and unison ring, which binds the vanes. We clean and free the geometry, replace worn bushings, and recalibrate the actuator so it sweeps freely again.
How long should a rebuilt Caterpillar turbo last?
With proper oil supply, clean filters, and a short cool-down before shutdown, a properly rebuilt Caterpillar turbo will commonly match the service life of the original unit, often hundreds of thousands of miles on-highway.

How to Identify Your Caterpillar Turbo

The identification tag is typically located on the compressor housing, bearing housing, or center section of the turbocharger. It usually lists the model number, assembly number, and serial number. If you’re not sure which Caterpillar model you have, send PT Turbo a photo of the tag and we’ll help identify it before you ship anything.

PT Turbo Inspection Process

Every turbocharger goes through the same evaluation before any work begins:

  1. Initial evaluationcompressor wheel, turbine wheel, shaft, bearing housing, VGT assembly (if equipped), actuator, and seal surfaces are checked first.
  2. Complete disassemblythe turbocharger is fully torn down and every major component is inspected individually.
  3. Cleaningcomponents are cleaned to remove carbon, oil residue, rust, and contamination.
  4. Measurementcritical tolerances are measured against OEM specification.
  5. Reassemblyrebuilt using new wear components matched to your specific model.
  6. CIMAT VSR balancingthe rotating assembly is balanced in-house, with a balance report included.
  7. Final inspectionleak test, visual inspection, and actuator or wastegate function check before shipment.

No work begins without your approval. You receive a quote after inspection, not before.

Pricing

Most rebuilds require inspection before final pricing. Standard rebuild pricing depends on the turbo model, parts availability, wheel condition, shaft condition, housing damage, and whether upgrades are requested. PT Turbo inspects every turbo and sends a quote before any work begins — no surprise charges.
