Holset Models We Rebuild

About Holset Turbocharger Rebuilds

PT Turbo has been rebuilding Holset turbochargers since 1978, from the fixed-geometry HX-series units found on older 12-valve Cummins to the electronic VGT units on modern 6.7L Ram trucks. We disassemble each unit completely, inspect the shaft, bearings, wheels, and housings, replace the CHRA internals with new components, and balance the rotating assembly to factory tolerance before it leaves the shop.

A proper rebuild is almost always smarter than buying a new or remanufactured drop-in unit. Holset cores are durable and the housings rarely need replacing, so rebuilding your original unit keeps the correct fitment, saves the cost of a complete new turbo, and returns the turbo to spec instead of swapping in an unknown reman. This is for fleet owners, Cummins truck owners, ag and industrial operators, and diesel performance builders who want their turbo done right the first time.

Common Holset Applications

Dodge Ram Cummins Pickups

  • 1994-2002 Dodge Ram 5.9L 12-valve and 24-valve (HX35, H1C, HX40)
  • 2003-2007 Dodge Ram 5.9L common-rail (HE351CW)
  • 2007.5-2018 Dodge Ram 6.7L Cummins (HE351VE VGT)

Medium-Duty, Semi, and Commercial Trucks

  • ISB, ISC, and ISL Cummins medium-duty trucks (HE341CW, HE351VE)
  • ISX and Signature series semi trucks (HE431VE, HX55)
  • Box trucks, buses, and delivery fleets running B and C series Cummins

Industrial, Agricultural, and Generator Equipment

  • Cummins-powered tractors, combines, and harvesters (H1E, HX50)
  • Skid steers, excavators, and off-highway equipment (HX52)
  • Standby and prime power generator sets running B, C, and L series engines

Diesel Performance Builds

  • Towing and sled-pull builds upgrading from stock (HX40, HX50, HX55)
  • Compound and twin-turbo setups using a fixed-geometry HX as the atmosphere charger
  • High-horsepower street and competition Cummins swaps

Common Holset Turbocharger Symptoms

  • Excessive shaft play, side-to-side wobble, or compressor wheel contacting the housing on HX35 and HX40 units
  • Oil leaking past the seals into the intake or exhaust, often showing as blue smoke and a wet intercooler on 5.9L Cummins
  • High-pitched whining or siren noise from worn bearings or a damaged compressor wheel
  • VGT actuator sticking, throwing P132B, P0045, or P003A codes on HE351VE and HE431VE trucks
  • Low boost, sluggish throttle response, and poor towing power from a stuck-shut variable vane mechanism
  • Overboost spikes or boost that won’t taper from a vane assembly stuck open or a failing actuator
  • Black smoke under load when the turbo can’t make commanded boost
  • Metal-on-metal grinding, blue smoke at idle, or oil pooling in the downpipe from total bearing failure

Real Holset Failures We See in Our Shop

  • On the HE351VE and HE431VE VGT units we rebuild, soot and carbon pack into the variable vane cartridge and seize the unison ring. The actuator keeps commanding movement, the vanes won’t follow, and the truck throws over/under-boost codes long before the bearings ever wear out.
  • We frequently see electronic actuator failure on HE351VE 6.7L Ram turbos, where the calibrated motor and gears inside the actuator quit or lose position. People often replace the whole turbo when the core is perfectly good and just needs a vane cartridge cleaned and an actuator recalibrated.
  • On HX35 and HX40 units run hard or on aggressive fuel, we see thrust bearing failure from over-fueling and frequent shifting. The thrust washer wears, axial play opens up, and the compressor wheel walks forward into the cover.
  • Oil seal leaks on HX35 and H1C cores are extremely common, usually from a restricted or coked drain line raising crankcase pressure in the center housing and pushing oil past the seal ring into both the turbine and compressor sides.
  • On HX50, HX52, and HX55 performance and industrial units, we see compressor wheel damage and shaft bending from debris ingestion and over-speeding past the wheel’s safe map, often on builds with no air filtration discipline or too much drive pressure.
  • On older H1C and HE341CW turbos, we find heat-soaked, hardened center housings where the oil has coked around the bearings from hot shutdowns, wiping the journal bearings and scoring the shaft.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my Holset turbocharger be rebuilt?
In most cases yes, as long as the center housing and the compressor and turbine housings are not cracked. We rebuild the rotating assembly and reuse your good castings.
Do you need the whole unit or just the core?
Send the complete turbo including the actuator on VGT units so we can test, calibrate, and verify everything together. If you only have the bare core we can still rebuild it, but a complete unit gives the best result.
Is a rebuild cheaper than buying a replacement?
Almost always. A rebuild reuses your original housings and costs well under a new Holset unit, with the same back-to-spec performance.
Do you balance the turbo?
Yes. Every rotating assembly is balanced on our equipment before final assembly, which is what prevents the whining and premature bearing failure that comes from an unbalanced shaft.
Do you accept nationwide mail-in turbos?
Yes. We rebuild Holset units shipped in from across the country every week and turn them back around quickly.
What if my turbo is too damaged to rebuild?
If a housing is cracked or a wheel is destroyed, we source the correct replacement casting or wheel so you still end up with a fully restored unit instead of buying new.
What is the difference between the HX35 and the HE351CW?
The HX35 is the fixed-geometry wastegated turbo on the 1994-2002 5.9L Cummins, while the HE351CW is the larger fixed-geometry unit on the 2003-2007 common-rail 5.9L. They use different housings and are not direct swaps without supporting parts.
Why does my HE351VE keep throwing boost codes?
The most common cause is soot binding the variable vanes and unison ring, or a failing electronic actuator. We clean and free the vane cartridge and calibrate the actuator so the turbo holds commanded boost again.
How long should a rebuilt Holset turbo last?
A properly rebuilt and balanced HX or HE unit will run for years and many miles when fed clean oil and a good air filter. Hot shutdowns, restricted oil drains, and aggressive over-fueling are what shorten that life.

How to Identify Your Holset Turbo

The identification tag is typically located on the compressor housing, bearing housing, or center section of the turbocharger. It usually lists the model number, assembly number, and serial number. If you’re not sure which Holset model you have, send PT Turbo a photo of the tag and we’ll help identify it before you ship anything.

PT Turbo Inspection Process

Every turbocharger goes through the same evaluation before any work begins:

  1. Initial evaluationcompressor wheel, turbine wheel, shaft, bearing housing, VGT assembly (if equipped), actuator, and seal surfaces are checked first.
  2. Complete disassemblythe turbocharger is fully torn down and every major component is inspected individually.
  3. Cleaningcomponents are cleaned to remove carbon, oil residue, rust, and contamination.
  4. Measurementcritical tolerances are measured against OEM specification.
  5. Reassemblyrebuilt using new wear components matched to your specific model.
  6. CIMAT VSR balancingthe rotating assembly is balanced in-house, with a balance report included.
  7. Final inspectionleak test, visual inspection, and actuator or wastegate function check before shipment.

No work begins without your approval. You receive a quote after inspection, not before.
