Fault Codes Often Seen on Engines Equipped with the Holset HE431VE
These engines report faults through the truck’s own diagnostic system, and each engine maker adds its own fault numbers. The codes below are the generic ones tied to turbo control. They are set by the engine computer, not the turbo, so confirm with a scan tool before assuming the turbocharger is at fault.
- SPN 641 — Variable geometry turbocharger actuator
- SPN 103 — Turbocharger speed
- P0299 — Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Pressure – Low (underboost)
- P0234 — Turbocharger/Supercharger Overboost Condition
Also Known As
Buyers searching for this turbo use several names and shorthand variations.
- Holset HE431VE VGT
- Holset HE431VE variable geometry turbo
- Cummins ISL HE431VE turbo
- Volvo D11 turbo
- Mack MP7 turbo
- HE431VE Holset turbo
Engines and Vehicles Fitted With the Holset HE431VE
The HE431VE is a variable geometry turbo for engines of about 8 to 11 liters. It is not the 15 liter Cummins ISX turbo: the ISX15 uses the larger HE451VE, HE551VE and HE561VE.
Volvo D11 and Mack MP7 (11 Liter)
- Volvo VNM, VNL and VHD with the D11
- Mack Pinnacle and Granite with the MP7
- Some Volvo D13 and Mack MP8 ratings are also listed with an HE431VE: check the number on the tag
Cummins ISL and QSL (8.9 Liter)
- Motorhomes, transit buses and fire apparatus with the ISL
- Vocational trucks: refuse, mixers and dump trucks with the ISL
- QSL-powered off-highway equipment
PT Turbo lists HE431VE turbos, short turbos and rebuild kits for these engines; see the HE431VE model page.
Common Holset HE431VE Failure Symptoms
- Sluggish boost response and loss of low-end power, most noticeable pulling a load up a grade
- Fault codes for the turbo actuator: position, overcurrent or out of range
- Inconsistent boost or surging from a sticking nozzle
- A weak or dead engine brake, because the nozzle will not move to the closed position
- Bearing whine or a high-pitched shriek that changes with engine speed
- Shaft play you can feel by hand, both in-and-out and side-to-side
- Blue or gray smoke from oil passing worn seals
- Derate when the actuator cannot reach the commanded position
How the Holset HE431VE Usually Fails
Holset variable geometry turbos do not use pivoting vanes. A nozzle ring slides across the turbine inlet, driven by an electronic actuator on the bearing housing. Most failures come from that mechanism and from the mileage these engines run.
- A sooted, sticking nozzle. Exhaust deposits build up where the nozzle ring slides until it binds or stops short of full travel.
- Actuator wear and failure. The electronic actuator works against a stiff nozzle until its motor and gears wear out and it sets position codes. A replacement actuator has to be installed and calibrated to the turbo with the engine maker’s service tool.
- Turbo speed sensor faults, which set their own code and can put the engine into derate.
- Bearing wear from high mileage and extended oil intervals: shaft play, oil leakage and finally wheel contact with the housings.
- Wheel damage from debris through the intake, or from running on after the bearings have let the shaft move.
Preventing Future Holset HE431VE Failures
Most HE431VE failures are slowed by habits that keep the nozzle clean and the oil supply healthy.
- Hold to the engine maker’s oil and filter interval. Clean oil keeps the bearings alive on a turbo that runs this many miles
- Let the engine idle a short time before shutdown after hard pulls so the bearing housing sheds heat and the oil does not coke around the shaft
- Use the engine brake and run the engine through its load range regularly, which keeps the nozzle moving
- Check for boost and intake leaks at the charge piping and clamps
- Keep the air filter on schedule and watch the restriction gauge
- Deal with turbo actuator codes when they first appear instead of clearing them and driving on
- Keep the cooling and EGR systems healthy so exhaust temperature and soot loading stay in range
Common Holset HE431VE Upgrade Paths
On a working truck or coach the sensible goal is a stock-specification rebuild with every wear part renewed. An upgraded thrust bearing is available for this turbo; PT Turbo sells an HE431VE rebuild kit with one. Tell us how the vehicle is used and we will say what makes sense for your unit after inspection.

How to Identify Your Holset Turbo
The identification tag is typically located on the compressor housing of the turbocharger. It usually lists the model number, assembly number, and serial number. If you’re not sure which Holset model you have, send PT Turbo a photo of the tag and we’ll help identify it before you ship anything.

PT Turbo Inspection Process
Every turbocharger goes through the same evaluation before any work begins:
- Initial evaluationcompressor wheel, turbine wheel, shaft, bearing housing, VGT assembly (if equipped), actuator, and seal surfaces are checked first.
- Complete disassemblythe turbocharger is fully torn down and every major component is inspected individually.
- Cleaningcomponents are cleaned to remove carbon, oil residue, rust, and contamination.
- Measurementcritical tolerances are measured against OEM specification.
- Reassemblyrebuilt using new wear components matched to your specific model.
- CIMAT VSR balancingthe rotating assembly is balanced in-house, with a balance report included.
- Final inspectionleak test, visual inspection, and actuator or wastegate function check before shipment.
No work begins without your approval. You receive a quote after inspection, not before.
Pricing
Most rebuilds require inspection before final pricing. Standard rebuild pricing depends on the turbo model, parts availability, wheel condition, shaft condition, housing damage, and whether upgrades are requested. PT Turbo inspects every turbo and sends a quote before any work begins — no surprise charges.
Holset HE431VE turbo rebuilds start at $575. We inspect the turbo first and confirm the exact price with you before any work begins. See our turbo rebuild price list for the standard price of each turbo we rebuild.
