The Cummins ISX and ISX15 power more Class 8 trucks in North America than any other engine—Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Mack, and Volvo all use it. When the ISX turbo fails, the truck is down and the freight stops. Here is what you need to know about ISX turbocharger service.
Which Turbos Are Used on the ISX
Cummins has used several Holset turbos on the ISX family depending on year and horsepower rating:
- HX55W: Early ISX applications (pre-2007). Fixed geometry with wastegate. Less common in late-model fleets.
- HE400VG: ISX CM871 and CM2250 platforms. VGT design. Common in 2007–2012 ISX trucks.
- HE451VE: ISX CM2350 (2013+) and ISX15. Current production VGT. The most commonly rebuilt ISX turbo in our shop today.
Always confirm your specific turbo part number before ordering. ISX trucks span multiple displacement and rating variants, and the wrong turbo will not calibrate correctly with the ECM.
Common ISX Turbo Problems
VGT Actuator Failure
The HE400VG and HE451VE both use electronic actuators that can fail from heat cycling, contamination, and age. A failed actuator causes underboost (P0299), overboost, or erratic boost behavior. In many cases the actuator can be replaced without a full turbo rebuild.
EGR Interaction and Carbon Buildup
The ISX’s EGR system routes exhaust gases back through the intake to reduce NOx emissions. Over time this deposits carbon on the VGT vanes. Trucks operating in stop-and-go duty cycles (urban pickup/delivery, refuse, transit) are especially prone to vane stiction. The symptom is a P0299 code that comes and goes based on load conditions.
Oil Coking in the Center Section
Long idle periods followed by hard acceleration—common in over-the-road trucking—stress the turbo’s oil supply. Extended idling does not circulate enough oil to keep the center section cool. Post-run idle time (2–3 minutes) is especially important on ISX trucks before shutdown.
Turbine Wheel Cracking
On high-mileage ISX units with a history of overheating events, we occasionally see stress cracks at the turbine wheel root. This requires a core replacement rather than a bearing-and-seal rebuild.
Fleet Replacement Options
For fleets operating multiple ISX trucks, downtime cost typically exceeds parts cost. PT Turbo offers a core exchange program: we ship a rebuilt unit in advance, and you return the failed core after installation. This eliminates the wait time of a send-in rebuild and gets the truck back on the road the same day the replacement arrives.
PT Turbo has been the ISX turbocharger supplier of choice for independent fleets and owner-operators since the platform was introduced. Call us at (909) 824-1020 to discuss exchange options, or visit our online store. For fleets with multiple units, ask about volume pricing. Contact PT Turbo here.
