About Marine Turbocharger Rebuilds
PT Turbo rebuilds marine turbochargers for diesel propulsion engines, onboard generator sets, and auxiliary power units running in saltwater and freshwater service. We handle the units found on Volvo Penta, Yanmar, and Cummins marine platforms, restoring each one to factory shaft tolerances, flow rates, and boost targets so your vessel runs reliably whether you are running a commercial workboat or a recreational cruiser.
Marine turbos are expensive to replace outright, and many new units carry long lead times that leave a boat tied to the dock during peak season. A proper rebuild restores the same housing your engine was engineered around, corrects the actual failure rather than masking it, and typically costs a fraction of a new assembly. For most marine owners and yards, rebuilding the original core is the smarter and faster route back on the water.
Common Marine Applications
Marine Diesel Propulsion Engines
- Volvo Penta D-series inboard and sterndrive diesels
- Yanmar 4JH, 6LP, and 6LY series propulsion engines
- Cummins QSB, QSC, and QSM marine diesels
- Single and twin-engine sportfish and cruiser installations
Commercial and Recreational Vessels
- Commercial workboats, charter, and fishing vessels in continuous-duty service
- Recreational trawlers, cruisers, and sportfishing boats
- Repower and refit turbo restoration for older hulls
Onboard Generator Sets and Auxiliary Power
- Cummins Onan marine gensets
- Northern Lights and Kohler diesel generator turbos
- Auxiliary and house-power diesel sets
Common Marine Turbocharger Symptoms
- Excessive shaft play or audible bearing rattle from salt-air corrosion attacking the bearing housing
- Oil weeping from the turbine or compressor seals, often showing as oil in the intercooler or exhaust elbow
- High-pitched whining or siren noise indicating worn journal bearings or compressor wheel contact
- VGT or actuator sticking on Cummins QSB and QSC units, causing inconsistent boost and limp-mode events
- Low boost and sluggish acceleration under load, especially noticeable when planing or pushing into a current
- Overboost or boost spikes from a stuck wastegate or failed actuator diaphragm
- Black or gray smoke under load as boost falls short of fuel demand
- Compressor or turbine wheel damage from ingested debris, salt deposits, or a failed air filter element
Real Marine Failures We See in Our Shop
- On Cummins QSB and QSC Holset VGT units, we frequently see the sliding nozzle ring seize from soot and salt buildup. The actuator cannot stroke the vanes, and the engine throws boost faults or drops into limp mode even though the bearings are still good.
- We see a lot of saltwater intrusion through the exhaust elbow on closed-cooled marine engines. When the elbow corrodes or carbons up, water backs into the turbine housing and rusts the wheel, shaft, and bearing housing from the exhaust side in.
- On Yanmar 6LP and 6LY turbos, oil seal failure is common when owners shut the engine down hot without idling first. The bearing housing coke-locks the seals, and we find scored journals and blued shafts when the units come in.
- Volvo Penta D4 and D6 units come in with compressor wheel erosion from salt mist and moisture pulled through the intake, which throws the rotating assembly out of balance and accelerates bearing wear.
- On continuous-duty commercial and genset turbos, we see classic oil-starvation bearing failure traced back to clogged supply lines, degraded oil, or extended drain intervals in a hot engine room.
- We regularly find wastegate and actuator diaphragms that have hardened and cracked from engine-room heat cycling, which lets boost spike or hunt and eventually damages the turbine wheel.

How to Identify Your Marine Turbo
The identification tag is typically located on the compressor housing, bearing housing, or center section of the turbocharger. It usually lists the model number, assembly number, and serial number. If you’re not sure which Marine model you have, send PT Turbo a photo of the tag and we’ll help identify it before you ship anything.

PT Turbo Inspection Process
Every turbocharger goes through the same evaluation before any work begins:
- Initial evaluationcompressor wheel, turbine wheel, shaft, bearing housing, VGT assembly (if equipped), actuator, and seal surfaces are checked first.
- Complete disassemblythe turbocharger is fully torn down and every major component is inspected individually.
- Cleaningcomponents are cleaned to remove carbon, oil residue, rust, and contamination.
- Measurementcritical tolerances are measured against OEM specification.
- Reassemblyrebuilt using new wear components matched to your specific model.
- CIMAT VSR balancingthe rotating assembly is balanced in-house, with a balance report included.
- Final inspectionleak test, visual inspection, and actuator or wastegate function check before shipment.
No work begins without your approval. You receive a quote after inspection, not before.
Pricing
Most rebuilds require inspection before final pricing. Standard rebuild pricing depends on the turbo model, parts availability, wheel condition, shaft condition, housing damage, and whether upgrades are requested. PT Turbo inspects every turbo and sends a quote before any work begins — no surprise charges.
