Trouble Codes Often Seen on 3.0L Diesels Equipped with the GTB2260VK
These are generic diagnostic trouble codes commonly associated with turbo boost control issues on this application. They’re triggered by the vehicle’s ECU, not the turbo itself, so confirm with a scan tool before assuming the turbocharger is at fault. What each code means is on our list of turbocharger fault codes.
- P0299 — Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Pressure – Low (underboost)
- P0234 — Turbocharger/Supercharger Overboost Condition
- P2563 — Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor Performance
- P0045 — Turbocharger Boost Control Solenoid Circuit / Open
European makes also store their own manufacturer-specific fault codes for the same faults.

Vehicles Fitted With the GTB2260VK
The GTB2260VK is a passenger-car and SUV turbo for 3.0L six-cylinder diesels. Garrett built it in several versions that share the model name but not the housings or the part numbers.
Volkswagen Group 3.0L V6 TDI
Garrett 776470 series, Volkswagen/Audi number 059 145 722.
- Audi Q7 3.0 TDI
- Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 TDI
- Audi A6 3.0 TDI and Volkswagen Phaeton 3.0 TDI, sold mainly outside North America
- Porsche Cayenne Diesel, listed by parts sellers under the same number series
BMW 3.0L Six-Cylinder Diesel (M57)
- BMW 5 Series 525d and 530d (E60/E61), Garrett 758351 series
- BMW 3 Series 325d and 330d (E90/E91), Garrett 758352 series
A Volkswagen or Audi unit does not fit a BMW, or the reverse: the number on the tag decides which parts are right. PT Turbo lists the complete GTB2260VK turbo 776470-5003W and a GTB2260VK CHRA (760470-5007S).
Common GTB2260VK Failure Symptoms
- Limp mode with an underboost or overboost code, often under hard acceleration or on a long grade
- Slow boost build and a flat mid-range from vanes that no longer sweep
- Actuator faults: the electronic actuator hunts, buzzes, or does not complete its sweep
- Blue or gray smoke and rising oil consumption from worn seals
- More than a light oil film in the intercooler piping
- A whine or siren noise that rises with engine speed
- Shaft play, or wheel contact marks inside the housings
How the GTB2260VK Usually Fails
The GTB2260VK is a small variable geometry turbo with an electronic actuator, and its failures follow from that design.
- Soot-stuck vanes. Short trips and low-speed driving let soot build on the vane ring until the vanes bind. The actuator can no longer reach its commanded position and the engine drops into limp mode.
- Electronic actuator wear and electrical faults. The actuator is an electric motor and gear drive with position feedback. Worn gears, heat-damaged electronics, or an actuator overloaded by stiff vanes all set position and boost control codes.
- Bearing wear from oil problems: extended service intervals, a restricted oil feed line, or oil diluted by repeated interrupted particulate filter regenerations.
- Seal leakage once shaft play develops, putting oil into the intake or the exhaust.
- A restricted particulate filter. A blocked filter raises exhaust back pressure and heat at the turbine, which loads the thrust bearing and pushes oil past the turbine seal.
- Foreign object damage to the compressor or turbine wheel.
Preventing Future GTB2260VK Failures
Most failures of this turbo come back to soot and oil, so prevention is about both.
- Change oil at the interval and to the specification the engine maker calls for, and sooner if most driving is short trips
- Give the vehicle a regular longer drive at full operating temperature so the particulate filter can regenerate and the vanes keep moving
- After hard driving, let the engine run easy for half a minute or more before shutdown
- Fix boost leaks at hoses and intercooler connections promptly
- Keep the air filter and crankcase ventilation serviced
- When a rebuilt or replacement turbo goes on, change the oil and filter and check that the oil feed line is clean
Common GTB2260VK Upgrade Paths
Most owners want the GTB2260VK returned to factory specification, and that is what we recommend for a road vehicle with emissions equipment. Hybrid builds with a larger billet compressor wheel exist for tuned engines; ask us and we will say whether your unit is a candidate after inspection.

How to Identify Your Garrett Turbo
The identification tag is typically located on the compressor housing of the turbocharger. It usually lists the model number, assembly number, and serial number. If you’re not sure which Garrett model you have, send PT Turbo a photo of the tag and we’ll help identify it before you ship anything.

PT Turbo Inspection Process
Every turbocharger goes through the same evaluation before any work begins:
- Initial evaluationcompressor wheel, turbine wheel, shaft, bearing housing, VGT assembly (if equipped), actuator, and seal surfaces are checked first.
- Complete disassemblythe turbocharger is fully torn down and every major component is inspected individually.
- Cleaningcomponents are cleaned to remove carbon, oil residue, rust, and contamination.
- Measurementcritical tolerances are measured against OEM specification.
- Reassemblyrebuilt using new wear components matched to your specific model.
- CIMAT VSR balancingthe rotating assembly is balanced in-house, with a balance report included.
- Final inspectionleak test, visual inspection, and actuator or wastegate function check before shipment.
No work begins without your approval. You receive a quote after inspection, not before.
Pricing
Most rebuilds require inspection before final pricing. Standard rebuild pricing depends on the turbo model, parts availability, wheel condition, shaft condition, housing damage, and whether upgrades are requested.
