Trouble Codes Often Seen on Performance Diesel Equipped with the BorgWarner S360

These are generic diagnostic trouble codes commonly associated with turbo boost control issues on this application. They’re triggered by the vehicle’s ECU, not the turbo itself, so confirm with a scan tool before assuming the turbocharger is at fault.

  • P0299 — Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Pressure – Low (underboost)
  • P0234 — Turbocharger/Supercharger Overboost Condition

Also Known As

Buyers searching for this turbo often use a handful of different names for the same unit.

  • BorgWarner S360 SX-E
  • BorgWarner S360 SXE
  • BW S360 performance diesel turbo
  • S360 mid-frame turbo
  • BorgWarner S300 series S360
  • BorgWarner S360 single turbo

Vehicles We Commonly See With the BorgWarner S360

The S360 is a popular drop-in and upgrade choice across diesel performance builds, and we see it on a wide range of platforms.

Cummins Performance Builds

  • 1989-2002 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 with the 5.9L 12-valve and 24-valve Cummins
  • 2003-2007 Dodge Ram 5.9L common rail builds running a single S360 swap
  • Sled pull and street/strip 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins setups

Power Stroke and Duramax Conversions

  • 7.3L and 6.0L Power Stroke single-turbo conversions
  • LB7/LLY Duramax builds using the S360 as a primary or atmosphere charger
  • Compound setups where the S360 serves as the high-pressure unit

Off-Road and Equipment

  • Diesel pulling tractors and competition trucks
  • Mid-size diesel equipment retrofitted with the S360 for added airflow

Common BorgWarner S360 Failure Symptoms

  • Excessive shaft play, both side-to-side and in-and-out, indicating worn journal or thrust bearings
  • Whining or grinding from the center section under boost, usually pointing to bearing wear
  • Oil pulling through the compressor and showing up as blue smoke under load
  • Oil at the cold-side outlet and intercooler piping from a failing seal
  • Loss of boost or slow spool from a wheel contacting the housing or from damaged blades
  • Audible rubbing or contact noise during spool-up
  • Visible compressor wheel tip damage or blade erosion when you inspect the inlet
  • Boost that builds erratically or surges, often after aggressive tuning changes

Real BorgWarner S360 Failures We See in Our Shop

  • Over-speed damage is by far the most common thing we pull apart on these. When the S360 gets pushed past its efficiency range with aggressive fueling and timing, the compressor wheel spins faster than it was ever meant to and we see cracked blade roots and wheels that have grenaded.
  • Thrust bearing failures show up constantly on units that have been tuned hard. The S360 is a mid-frame turbo, and sustained high boost with rapid throttle changes loads the thrust bearing in both directions until it wears out and lets the rotating assembly walk.
  • Compressor wheel contact is something we see when guys run the S360 undersized for the power level they are chasing. The wheel gets pushed against the housing under thrust load and you end up with rub marks, smeared blade tips, and lost efficiency.
  • Bearing wear from sustained high boost is routine on high-mile race and pull units. The journal bearings glaze and wear, shaft play opens up, and that is usually what brings the turbo to us before a catastrophic failure happens.
  • We also see oil seal failures that follow bearing wear. Once the shaft has play in it, the piston ring seals can’t hold, and oil starts migrating to the compressor or turbine side.

Preventing Future BorgWarner S360 Failures

Most of the early S360 failures we see come down to how the turbo is run, not how it was built.

  • Match the turbo to your actual power level so you are not running it past its efficiency range and over-speeding the wheel
  • Change oil on a tight interval with a quality diesel-rated oil, since the bearing system depends on clean, fresh oil
  • Let the turbo idle and cool down after hard pulls or towing before shutting the engine off
  • Allow a proper warm-up before getting into the boost on cold mornings
  • Check the intake and boost piping for leaks regularly so the turbo isn’t working harder to make the same boost
  • Keep a clean air filter and a sealed intake tract to protect the compressor wheel from debris
  • Verify your tune isn’t commanding more boost or fuel than the S360 frame is comfortable supporting

Common BorgWarner S360 Upgrade Paths

Customers rebuilding an S360 frequently ask about upgrades that add durability for the power they are running. The most common requests are billet compressor wheels for better strength and airflow over the stock cast wheel, upgraded 360-degree thrust bearings to handle the heavy thrust loads that come with aggressive tuning, and improved journal bearings for high-boost reliability. Builders chasing higher power often ask about wheel and cover sizing changes within the S300 family, while towing-focused owners typically prioritize thrust and bearing upgrades for long-term reliability rather than peak airflow. We can talk through what makes sense for your specific build during the rebuild.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the BorgWarner S360 be rebuilt?
Yes. The S360 is fully rebuildable in almost all cases, and we rebuild these units regularly with new bearings, seals, and a balanced rotating assembly.
Do you need the whole unit or just the core?
We prefer the complete turbo so we can inspect every component, but at minimum we need the core assembly. Sending the whole unit lets us catch housing and wheel damage that affects the rebuild.
Is a rebuild cheaper than replacement?
In nearly every case, yes. A rebuild costs a fraction of a new S360 and restores the unit to proper running condition.
Do you balance the turbo?
Always. Every S360 we rebuild gets the rotating assembly balanced, which is critical on this frame given how easily it can be over-sped.
Do you accept nationwide mail-in turbos?
We do. Customers ship us S360 units from all over the country, and we turn them around and ship them back rebuilt and tested.
What if the damage is too severe to rebuild?
If a wheel has grenaded or a housing is cracked beyond use, we tell you up front and source the needed components or a replacement core rather than putting a compromised turbo back together.
How does the S360 compare to the S363 and S366?
The S360 is a smaller mid-frame unit than the S363 and S366, so it spools quicker but supports less power. If you are consistently over-speeding an S360, that is often a sign you have outgrown the frame.
What causes the over-speed failures the S360 is known for?
Over-speed almost always comes from running too much fuel and timing for the turbo’s size, which pushes the compressor wheel past its safe rpm and cracks or destroys it. Sizing the turbo correctly for your power level is the fix.
How long does a rebuilt S360 last?
A properly rebuilt and correctly sized S360 will run for years on a street or tow truck. Hard-tuned race and pull units have a shorter life simply because of the loads they see.

How to Identify Your BorgWarner Turbo

The identification tag is typically located on the compressor housing, bearing housing, or center section of the turbocharger. It usually lists the model number, assembly number, and serial number. If you’re not sure which BorgWarner model you have, send PT Turbo a photo of the tag and we’ll help identify it before you ship anything.
