About the Toyota CT20 and CT26 Turbochargers
The Toyota CT20 and CT26 are Toyota-engineered turbochargers that powered some of the most respected turbocharged vehicles in Toyota history. The CT26 is best known as the turbocharger fitted to the Toyota Supra Turbo (MK3, 1986-1992) with the 7M-GTE engine — a turbo that helped make the MK3 Supra a collector-grade performance car. Versions of the CT20 appeared in the Toyota Land Cruiser HDJ80 and HDJ100 series, the Toyota HiLux Surf, and various Cressida and Crown models sold in the Japanese domestic market.
Both turbos share similar design architecture, and many rebuild components are compatible across the CT20 and CT26 platforms. This gasket set covers both variants, making it the correct choice for Supra restoration projects, Land Cruiser rebuilds, and any CT-series turbocharger reseal.
CT26 in the Toyota Supra: Why Gasket Replacement Matters
The MK3 Toyota Supra with the 7M-GTE is a collector-grade vehicle, and many examples now have well over 200,000 miles on the original CT26 turbocharger. At those mileages, the CT26 exhaust housing gasket has typically survived 20,000 or more heat cycles. Even without an active failure, preventive gasket replacement during any 7M-GTE rebuild is strongly recommended.
A failing CT26 exhaust housing gasket produces a characteristic tick that is sometimes mistaken for the 7M-GTE head gasket — a well-known failure point on these engines. Before committing to a head gasket repair, verify that the turbo exhaust housing gasket is intact. A gasket set at this price point is considerably less expensive than an unnecessary cylinder head job.
CT20 in the Land Cruiser and HiLux Surf
The CT20 turbocharger used in the Toyota Land Cruiser HDJ series is a workhorse unit designed for sustained high-load operation under demanding conditions. These vehicles see intensive use in off-road, commercial, and overland applications. When a CT20 develops an exhaust leak from a deteriorated gasket, boost pressure drops, fuel economy declines, and exhaust temperatures rise. A complete gasket replacement restores correct turbine function and is the proper first step in any CT20 restoration.
