IHI Models We Rebuild
About IHI Turbocharger Rebuilds
At PT Turbo, we have been rebuilding IHI turbochargers since 1978, covering everything from the RHF5 units on Isuzu diesels to the VF-series turbos that Subaru enthusiasts depend on. We disassemble each unit completely, inspect the shaft and bearing housing, replace the bearings, seals, and thrust components, and rebuild to factory clearances so the turbo performs like it did the day it left the line.
For most owners, a rebuild makes far more sense than a full replacement. IHI cores are well built and worth saving, and rebuilding the original unit means correct fitment, no core charge headaches, and a cost that is typically a fraction of a new OEM part. If you have an Isuzu truck, a Subaru, a marine diesel, or industrial equipment running an IHI turbo, we can return your unit to spec.
Common IHI Applications
Isuzu Light and Medium-Duty Trucks
- RHF5 and RHF55 units on Isuzu 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder diesels
- NPR, NQR, and FRR series medium-duty box and flatbed trucks
- Fleet and commercial delivery vehicles running high duty cycles
Subaru VF-Series Performance Applications
- VF39, VF40, VF48, and VF52 units on WRX and STI platforms
- Legacy GT and Forester XT turbo models
- Both factory and lightly modified setups
Marine and Industrial Diesel
- RHB31 and RHF5 units on small marine diesel engines
- Light industrial equipment, generators, and compact machinery
- Auxiliary and propulsion engines operating in saltwater environments
Common IHI Turbocharger Symptoms
- Excessive shaft play, both radial and axial, felt by rocking the compressor wheel by hand
- Oil leaking past the turbine or compressor seals, often showing as blue smoke on a VF40 or VF48 Subaru
- High-pitched whining or siren noise that rises with RPM, signaling worn bearings or a damaged wheel
- Low boost or slow spool, common on RHF5 Isuzu units with worn bearings or a leaking actuator
- Overboost or boost spikes from a sticking or misadjusted wastegate actuator
- Blue or grey smoke under load as seals degrade and oil enters the intake or exhaust
- Oil in the intercooler piping or charge pipes, pointing to compressor-side seal failure
- Sudden loss of power with metallic grinding, indicating bearing or thrust failure
Real IHI Failures We See in Our Shop
- On Subaru VF52 and VF48 units, we frequently see thrust bearing failure caused by oil starvation, often traced to a clogged banjo filter or an extended oil change interval. The thrust wears, the shaft moves fore and aft, and the seals start leaking shortly after.
- On VF39 and VF40 STI turbos, we see compressor wheel damage and shaft fatigue from aggressive tunes and over-speed. The factory wheel is not built for sustained high-boost abuse, and once it cracks or the shaft bends, balance is gone.
- On Isuzu RHF5 and RHF55 units in NPR and NQR trucks, we regularly find carbon and coking in the center housing from high idle time and heat soak after shutdown. This bakes the oil, scores the journals, and accelerates bearing wear.
- On RHB31 marine units, we see corrosion and salt intrusion attacking the housings and shaft, along with seal failure from the engine sitting between seasons. These come in needing more housing work than the average automotive unit.
- Across the VF-series, we see oil leaks past worn piston-ring seals show up as blue smoke after the turbo, which owners often mistake for a bad valve seal or engine issue when the turbo is the real cause.
- On higher-mileage Isuzu fleet trucks, we find wastegate actuators that have rusted or seized, leaving the engine in overboost or unable to build boost at all because the gate no longer moves freely.

How to Identify Your IHI Turbo
The identification tag is typically located on the compressor housing, bearing housing, or center section of the turbocharger. It usually lists the model number, assembly number, and serial number. If you’re not sure which IHI model you have, send PT Turbo a photo of the tag and we’ll help identify it before you ship anything.

PT Turbo Inspection Process
Every turbocharger goes through the same evaluation before any work begins:
- Initial evaluationcompressor wheel, turbine wheel, shaft, bearing housing, VGT assembly (if equipped), actuator, and seal surfaces are checked first.
- Complete disassemblythe turbocharger is fully torn down and every major component is inspected individually.
- Cleaningcomponents are cleaned to remove carbon, oil residue, rust, and contamination.
- Measurementcritical tolerances are measured against OEM specification.
- Reassemblyrebuilt using new wear components matched to your specific model.
- CIMAT VSR balancingthe rotating assembly is balanced in-house, with a balance report included.
- Final inspectionleak test, visual inspection, and actuator or wastegate function check before shipment.
No work begins without your approval. You receive a quote after inspection, not before.
