Mitsubishi Models We Rebuild
About Mitsubishi Turbocharger Rebuilds
PT Turbo has been rebuilding Mitsubishi turbochargers since 1978, covering everything from the small TD04 and TF035 found on factory diesel and gas engines to the larger TD06 and 20G units used in performance and industrial builds. We disassemble each unit completely, inspect the shaft, bearings, and housings, replace the CHRA components to factory tolerances, and balance the rotating assembly before it leaves the bench. This service is for owners who want their original housings and fitment preserved instead of gambling on an unknown aftermarket replacement.
On most Mitsubishi cores, rebuilding is the smarter call because the housings are durable and the failure is almost always confined to the center cartridge. Replacing the whole turbo means paying for housings you already own and often accepting reduced quality. A proper rebuild restores OEM performance at a fraction of the cost and keeps your original casting numbers intact.
Common Mitsubishi Applications
Light Diesel and Gas Engines
- Mitsubishi 4-cylinder diesel and gas engines running TD04, TF035, and TD04L units
- Subaru turbocharged gas engines using TD04 and TD04HL platforms
- Factory-boost passenger and SUV applications with 16G and TD05 frames
Light Commercial Trucks
- Light-duty diesel trucks running 14B and TD05H turbochargers
- Delivery and work vehicles with TD06 and TD06H units under sustained load
Marine and Industrial
- Marine diesel power plants using TD05 and TD06 frame turbos
- Industrial generators, pumps, and equipment running 14B and larger TD06H units
Performance Import Builds
- 4G63 and EJ-series builds running 16G, Big 16G, and 18G upgrades
- High-output street and track setups stepping up to TD05H, TD06H, and 20G turbos
Common Mitsubishi Turbocharger Symptoms
- Excessive shaft play you can feel by rocking the compressor wheel, common on high-mile TD04 and 16G cores
- Oil leaking into the intake or exhaust from worn seals, showing as blue smoke on a TD05 or TD06
- A high-pitched whining or siren noise from the bearings as the cartridge starts to fail
- Low boost or slow spool from worn wheels, carbon-fouled passages, or a leaking wastegate actuator
- Overboost or boost spikes from a stuck or improperly set actuator on TD04HL and similar units
- Black or blue smoke under load, pointing to oil carryover or a damaged compressor wheel
- Oil weeping from the center housing onto the turbine housing, often mistaken for a gasket leak
- Grinding or contact between the compressor wheel and housing from a collapsed bearing
Real Mitsubishi Failures We See in Our Shop
- On the TD04 and TD04L units we rebuild, we frequently see journal bearing wear from extended oil change intervals and coked oil, which lets the shaft drift until the compressor wheel contacts the housing.
- We see a lot of 16G and Big 16G performance cores come in with compressor wheel damage from over-speeding on aggressive boost tunes, where the wheel cracks or shears at the bore.
- On TD05H and TD06H turbos run hard, thrust bearing failure is common because hard launches and rapid throttle transitions overload the thrust collar, and once that fails the shaft walks and starts pushing oil past the seals.
- The TF035 units off smaller engines often arrive with a leaking or sticking wastegate actuator, which causes erratic boost and overboost faults that get blamed on the ECU when it is mechanical.
- We regularly find oil-starved center sections on Subaru-fit TD04HL cores from banjo filter screens clogging and choking oil supply, which wipes the bearings in short order.
- On 14B and larger industrial and marine units, we see carbon buildup and turbine-side coking from low-RPM idle duty cycles, which gums the bearing system and slows spool well before any wheel damage shows.

How to Identify Your Mitsubishi Turbo
The identification tag is typically located on the compressor housing, bearing housing, or center section of the turbocharger. It usually lists the model number, assembly number, and serial number. If you’re not sure which Mitsubishi model you have, send PT Turbo a photo of the tag and we’ll help identify it before you ship anything.

PT Turbo Inspection Process
Every turbocharger goes through the same evaluation before any work begins:
- Initial evaluationcompressor wheel, turbine wheel, shaft, bearing housing, VGT assembly (if equipped), actuator, and seal surfaces are checked first.
- Complete disassemblythe turbocharger is fully torn down and every major component is inspected individually.
- Cleaningcomponents are cleaned to remove carbon, oil residue, rust, and contamination.
- Measurementcritical tolerances are measured against OEM specification.
- Reassemblyrebuilt using new wear components matched to your specific model.
- CIMAT VSR balancingthe rotating assembly is balanced in-house, with a balance report included.
- Final inspectionleak test, visual inspection, and actuator or wastegate function check before shipment.
No work begins without your approval. You receive a quote after inspection, not before.
